What is a concussion?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that results in disrupted brain function caused by the stretching and damaging of brain cells. This damage occurs when the brain comes in contact with the inside of your skull. You do NOT need to hit your head, nor lose consciousness to sustain a concussion.

Most concussions will resolve symptomatically on their own within 2-4 weeks, but sometimes concussive symptoms can last months, or even years. When symptoms remain for longer than 1-2 months you may be diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS).

The most commonly injured areas of the brain are those that both regulate your vital signs, and coordinate the way your eyes, head, and neck move together. These brain regions analyze information coming from your eyes (ocular system), your inner ear (vestibular system), and your muscles/joints (proprioceptive system) to give you body awareness. When these areas are injured it can lead to symptoms like headache, dizziness, poor balance, brain fog, muscle tension/pain, light/sound sensitivity, eye strain, and more.

At Virtual Brain Rehab, Dr. Perman aims to identify which brain cells are injured and carefully rehabilitate them so that they can get stronger. We also work to identify and treat any ocular (eye), vestibular (inner ear), or proprioceptive (muscle/joint) dysfunction that may be contributing to your symptoms. We accomplish this through consultation and assessment, teaching you at-home therapies, managing your nutrition/hormone balance, and guiding you to additional practitioners and services near your home that may also be beneficial for you, all via Telehealth video conferences.

With this multi-faceted approach we can help strengthen your brain and body to truly improve your post-concussive symptoms. Our non-invasive methods are designed to significantly reduce symptom frequency, intensity, and duration. Our primary goal is to help you live your ideal life, without symptoms!
